The End of the U.S. Penny: What It Means for You

On November 12, 2025, the U.S. Treasury and U.S. Mint discontinued penny production. After more than 230 years,  the penny’s era is coming to an end.

What You Should Know

  • Pennies remain official currency and can still be used in transactions
  • The supply of pennies will slowly decrease as no new coins are minted and existing reserves circulate • Many businesses will begin rounding cash payments to the nearest five cents
  • Cards, digital payments, and checks will continue to process exact amounts

How This Affects Our Customers

  • Our bank has a limited supply of pennies
  • We may not be able to accommodate requests, including those for uncirculated, rolled, or large quantities
  • Businesses with routine coin orders may receive smaller quantities based on availability

How Businesses Can Prepare

  • Review your cash handling practices and consider implementing a rounding policy
  • Monitor your penny inventory and plan accordingly
  • Communicate changes clearly with your customers
  • Use cards, digital payments, or checks for exact transactions

Why Penny Production Ended

Making a penny now costs nearly four cents—more than the coin’s value. As digital payments grow and currency use declines, stopping production reduces long-term costs and streamlines the nation’s coin system.
